Local GovernmentHunt & Hunt has strength in the local government sector, particularly throughout New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. We currently count several dozen local government entities among our clients. Across the Tasman, our New Zealand partner firm, Brookfields, has a 100 year history in local government work, and today receives instructions from more than 20 city, regional and district councils. Our firm also undertakes public liability and professional liability work for local and regional councils in many States through the industry's insurance broker. Our local government team is headed by a former Chief Executive Officer of the City of Melbourne, which provides us with an unrivalled understanding of this level of government's operating environment, including the imperative for accountability, transparency, probity, confidentiality, privacy, and risk and reputation management. We are experienced at defending local government claims before a wide range of regulatory bodies and agencies and at both the trial and appeal court levels. Where the interests of our clients dictate, we make use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms including mediation and arbitration. In addition, our firm also has specialist qualifications in complementary fields such as planning and environmental law. Many of our lawyers have undertaken or are pursuing Masters degrees in areas such as commercial laws, intellectual property, labour relations and science. Several also have had the experience of secondment to our private and public sector clients.
