Experience

Andrew commenced working with Hunt & Hunt in 2004 and is a member of the firm's corporate and international relations teams. 

Andrew practices in the area of commercial law with a focus on customs and international trade. He has provided legal services to all parties involved with industry, including importers, exporters, customs brokers, freight forwarders, shipper and trade financiers. This has involved advice and actions seeking judicial and administrative review of the actions of various government departments.

He has provided advice covering all aspects of trade ranging from international trade conventions, arbitrations to resolve disputes, trade financing options, commodity and freight contracts to dealing with inquiries and prosecutions by Customs in such matters as dumping and alleged underpayments of customs duty, together with all related litigation.

His key projects include:

  • representing a significant Australian manufacturer in a number of AAT matters to oppose applications for Tariff Concession Orders by importers of competing products;
  • acting for a Chinese manufacturer and exporter of chemicals to oppose allegations of dumping of its product in Australia;
  • acting for a major Australian importer of Asian foodstuffs to oppose application of anti-dumping measures including successful review of Customs action to the Trade Measures Review Officer;
  • acting for a number of Australia companies to review tariff classifications adopted by Customs leading to reduction of duty payable and refund of past duty paid;
  • acting for industry associations, importers and service providers to service compensation for losses following the introduction of new Customs IT systems in October 2005; and
  • representing industry in relation to the introduction of new legislation including appearances before the Senate Inquiries and implementing legislation.  This has included submissions to the Senate Inquiries on Trade Modernisation Legislation, legislation imposing strict and absolute liability (including for Customs offences) new anti-dumping legislation, proposed Free Trade Agreements and other Customs powers. Andrew is also a regular presenter at industry forums on legal developments.

Andrew was awarded the CBFCA National Award for contribution to the CBFCA and Barrier Clearance/International Freight Forwarding Industry in 2002 and 2006.

Andrew was also awarded a Certificate of Service by the Law Institute of Victoria in 2009 for his significant contribution to the legal profession.
