Chong Quaik is the head of our Asian & Chinese Advisory and Migration Teams. Chong is a highly regarded lawyer in Australia, Southeast Asia, and China, possessing a wealth of experience in cross-border transactions, business law, disputes and migration.
Chong’s clientele is extensive and encompasses Asian Australians residing in Australia and operating businesses both locally and abroad. He also serves numerous individuals and businesses in Southeast Asia and China that are engaged in trade and commerce with Australia.
He provides counsel to both local businesses seeking to expand internationally and foreign investors seeking to enter the Australian market.
Chong is a well-respected migration lawyer and is an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law.
He manages a wide range of cases, from the straightforward to the complex. These migration cases include assisting business entrepreneurs, innovation and investment visa applicants, resident return applications, and citizenship submissions while overseeing day-to-day operations. He has also advised on refugee matters, partner visas, business visas, resident return visas, work permits and visa cancellations.
His work in the commercial and immigration sectors extends to litigation in various Australian judicial bodies, including the Magistrates’ Court, the County Court, the Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit and Family Court, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, the Social Security Tribunal in Victoria, the Migration Review Tribunal, the Refugee Review Tribunal, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.
Additionally, he has provided legal representation for cases related to proceeds of crime, defending tax audits, disputes among shareholders and directors, commercial and residential leases, wills and probates, debt recovery, and consultation for multinational companies with operations in Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Prior to his current role, Chong served as a private secretary and press secretary to a former cabinet minister in Malaysia. He also held the position of president at Malaysia’s Consumer Claims Tribunal and the Strata Management Tribunal. Furthermore, he is a member of Project Sunflower, where he offers pro bono legal and migration advice concerning the situation in Ukraine.
Chong is proficient in reading and writing Mandarin, English, and Malay, and he speaks fluent Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, English, and Malay. He is licensed to practice law in both Australia and Malaysia.
