Personal Experience

Matt is a Partner within our Litigation and Dispute Resolution team who works with both private and our government clients.

Matt provides advice and appears as advocate in proceedings before courts across multiple Australian jurisdictions, primarily in the areas of debt recover and insolvency.

Matt has acted in over 2,000 debt recovery and enforcement proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia, Federal Circuit, Family Court of Australia and various state courts seeking to recover debts on behalf of our private clients and debt owing to the Commonwealth of Australia for child support, taxation and social security.

Additionally, Matt has acted for appointed liquidators appointed to companies in liquidation and trustees in bankruptcy supporting them to recover monies for the benefit of creditors.

Matt has worked with his clients to streamline referral and workflow processes by setting up over 150 precedents of regularly used forms and correspondence.

These standardised documents provide consistency in the form of the document and populates the particulars of a matter. They also create a cost benefit for Matt’s clients and provides uniformity across the high volume of matters.

  • Acting on behalf of Services Australia (Centrelink) in debt recovery proceedings commenced under the Social Security Act 1991 in various state courts across Australia.
  • Acting on behalf of liquidators in claims seeking to recover amounts arising from unfair preference claims and insolvent trading claims under the corporations legislation.
  • Acting on behalf of the Child Support Registrar in proceedings before the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia successfully obtaining orders for the recovery of child support debts.
  • Acting on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Taxation in proceedings before the Supreme Court of New South Wales successfully obtaining summary judgment for payment of taxation liabilities in a sum exceeding $6m where there was a risk of the defendant attempting to dispose of substantial assets.
