Update on Victorian Sex Work Reforms

Update on Victorian Sex Work Reforms

On 22 February 2022, the Victorian Parliament passed the Sex Work Decriminalisation Bill 2021 and Royal Assent is expected imminently.

The new law recognises that sex work is lawful work, and therefore should be regulated under ordinary business laws. The first stage of reform dealing with the removal of offences and criminal penalties for sex work will commence on 10 May 2022. The remainder of the reforms and the repeal of the sex work licencing system will occur on 1 December 2023.

For more information on what the decriminalisation of sex work means, and how it may impact on Local Government, please refer to our previous article available here.
