Online reviews can have a powerful impact on a business's reputation '€” particularly for those in the hospitality industry, where star ratings often influence foot traffic and bookings. However, not all reviews are fair, accurate, or even relevant.
Recently, we acted for a restaurant client who received a 1-star Google review from an individual who had' never actually dined at the venue. The reviewer admitted to simply walking past the premises and posting a negative comment based solely on the' appearance of a staff member. The review did not mention any interaction with the restaurant's food, service, or experience '€” just a passing impression.
Understandably, our client was concerned about the impact of such an unfounded and irrelevant review. We submitted a detailed takedown request to Google, arguing that the review did not reflect a genuine customer experience and was in breach of Google's review policies, which require content to be based on first-hand, legitimate experiences of the business's goods or .
We're pleased to report that Google agreed and' removed the review in full.
This case is a reminder that not all reviews need to be accepted at face value. Where a review is fake, irrelevant, or misleading, business owners may have options to challenge and remove it.
